In 1971, the Department of Safety Sciences was established within what is now the College of Health and Human Services to conduct professional programs in safety management and occupational safety and health. We have educated more than 2,500 safety and health professionals over the past 38 years, with employment placement rates consistently above 90 percent. These graduates have excelled in their careers and are employed in a variety of industries, such as chemicals, construction, steel, consulting, insurance, and manufacturing.
Safety Sciences Mission Statement
The mission of the Safety Sciences Department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania is to prepare individuals for careers in the safety sciences, which encompass occupational safety, occupational health, environmental safety, fire protection, ergonomics, systems safety, emergency planning and response, and safety management. The following actions guide the department in its endeavor to meet this mission: - Assist the university and the College of Health and Human Services in achieving their missions.
- Use the teacher-scholar model and the learning-centered environment to enhance the education of all students.
- Target graduate education to meet the needs of current and future practitioners.
- Create a learning community that is diverse in its composition and committed to tolerance, compassion and service.
- Acquire and utilize technology that facilitates active participation in the creation and use of information on a global scale.
- Develop and maintain high quality curricula in undergraduate and graduate programs and offer continuing education coursework within the primary knowledge area of safety sciences.
- Conduct research whenever these opportunities are found in the safety sciences.
- Cooperate with employers to provide internship and cooperative education experiences for students.
- Consult and maintain relationships through professional associations and advisory committees to expand the knowledge to protect life, property, and the environment.
Program Educational Objectives - Bachelor of Science
During their first five years upon graduation, graduates working as safety, health and environmental professionals will demonstrate abilities to - anticipate, identify, and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices
- develop hazard control methods, procedures, and programs
- implement, administer, and advise others on hazard controls and hazardcontrol programs
- evaluate hazard based on qualitative/quantitative methods and analyze and interpret data to develop controls
- Graduates will continue their professional growth after graduation and the integration of new knowledge into their profession.
- Graduates will act in a professional and ethical manner.

Offering career preparation in Occupational Safety and Health
The Department of Occupational Safety and Health is located in the Martha Layne Collins Center for Industry and Technology, completed in 1991. Facilities include specialized labs for study in Industrial Hygiene and Physical Agents, Physical Hazards and Product Safety, Ergonomics and Work Hardening, Emergency Medical Training, Hazardous Materials, and Fire Safety. In addition, students have the opportunity to work in various environmental labs, as well as the general computer and computer-aided design (CAD) labs. All students participate in field work while serving as interns, and many avail themselves of the opportunity to study and work in our exchange program with the University of Tampere in Finland.

Selecting a career in Occupational Safety and Health will not only provide a good income but will give you the added benefits of self-satisfaction and recognition in society. The primary responsibility of this profession is to protect our most precious resource - fellow human beings - by assuring every person a safe and healthful place to work. There is a projected strong demand for persons entering the profession. Graduates with a degree in Occupational Safety and Health may find challenging positions in industrial plants; factories; insurance; construction; commerce; and federal, state and local government. The job outlook for college graduates in Occupational Safety and Health is extremely good, and starting salaries are competitive with those of other fields
The curriculum in Occupational Safety and Health at MSU provides a broad-based educational background designed to prepare individuals for entry level and advanced work in the field. Practicing safety professionals today must draw upon specialized knowledge in both the physical and social sciences. In performing their job functions, they will apply the principles of measurement and analysis to evaluate safety performance. They must have fundamental knowledge of statistics, mathematics, physics, and chemistry, as well as the fundamentals of the engineering disciplines. Safety practitioners will utilize knowledge in the fields of behavior, motivation, and communication. Knowledge of management principles, as well as the theory of business and government organization, is also necessary. It is essential for the practicing safety professional to acquire a unique and diversified type of education and training in order to meet the challenges of the future. The population explosion, energy crisis, advancing technology, problems of urban areas, future transportation systems, as well as the increasing complexities of everyday life, will generate many problems and hazards.

The mission of the Occupational Safety and health Technology (OSH) Program is to provide a high quality occupational safest and health educational experience to both pre-service students and in-service safety and health professionals to ensure these individuals can function effectively at the safety technician level. Curriculum is based on the American Society of Safety Engineers and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, INC (ABET) guidelines that reflect the tasks and functions performed by safety and health practitioners.
The OSH program educational objective address specific performance outcomes necessary for success of the entry-level safety technician with an Associate of Applied Science degree in Occupational Safety and health Technology.
Upon graduation from the program students will be able to demonstrate: - proficiency in the application of mathematics, chemistry and life sciences by solving safety-related problems and conducting experiments.
- proficiency in written and oral communications.
- knowledge of modern safety practices and fundamentals
- knowledge of industrial hygiene, fundamental exposure measurement techniques, and toxicolocy.
- knowledge of the legal aspects of safety and health practice.
- proficiency in the development of site-specifc safety and health programs.

- knowledge of ergonomics.
- knowledge of fire prevention and protection.
- knowledge of general industry and construction safety.
- knowledge of the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork.

Occupational Safety and Health classes are delivered exclusively online through the Colorado community college Online consortium. The Department of Safety Sciences of the University of Central Missouri (formerly Central Missouri State University) provides diverse safety and health programs for the undergraduate and graduate students. The Department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Safety Management, and Occupational Safety and Health. In conjunction with these degree the department offers minors in Safety, Fire Science, and Security. The Department also offers Master of Science degrees in Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Safety Management.
