Associate EHS Director & Sustainability


We are seeking an Associate Director, Environmental Health, Safety (EHS) and Sustainability for our Safety Assessment group site located in Ashland, Ohio.

Responsible for managing and directing Environmental, Health, Safety and Sustainability (EHS&S) functions to serve the company’s strategic and tactical needs. Principal responsibilities include the development and delivery of leading edge EHS&S programs within the company and overseeing continuous improvement and performance around core EHS&S metrics

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide site oversight of EHS&S policies and procedures.
• Oversee and manage the day to day performance of direct reports, vendors and contractors.
• Provide proactive direction on initiatives that will improve site, EHS&S performance while minimizing risks and exposures.
• Design, implement and continuously improve EHS&S programs consistent with industry standard practices.
• Manage and direct site programs which ensure compliance with applicable regulations and internal policies.
• Represent CRL to outside parties which are interested in EHS&S aspects within the corporation, inclusive of regulatory authority industry.
• Support the planning, response and recovery operation for emergency situations and disaster recovery and coordinate the development and implementation of appropriate response plans.
• Actively engage internal partners to identify and adopt best practices.
• Stay informed of current and new regulatory requirements and other guidelines considered for implementation.
• Communicate regulatory and technical information to appropriate personnel with the corporation.
• Direct change management and site initiatives that improve employee engagement in EHS&S activities.
• Responsible for personnel management activities such as: scheduling, personnel actions (hiring, promotions, transfers, etc.), training and development, providing regular direction and feedback on performance, disciplinary actions and preparing and delivering annual performance and salary reviews.
• Develop short- and long-range operating objectives, organizational structure, staffing requirements and succession plans.
• Perform risk assessments (biological, chemical, high hazards etc.)
• Integrate activities with those of other major organizational units (e.g. segments, departments, functions).
• Develop and recommend departmental budget and authorize expenditures.
• Develop and oversee the implementation of departmental training programs, including orientation.
• Support the policy of equal employment opportunity through affirmative action in personnel actions.
• Ensure adherence to pertinent regulatory requirements and to departmental policies, practices and procedures [SOPs, safety procedures and biosafety protocols].
• Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in Health and Safety, Biosafety or Environmental Sciences or related discipline.
• Experience: 8 years related experience in a mid-to-large size organization with EHS&S management responsibilities.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
• Certification/Licensure: CBSP, RBP, CSP certificates a plus.
• Other: Expert level knowledge and application of environmental health, safety and Sustainability regulations and familiarity with regulatory agencies protocols (e.g., OSHA, EPA, DEP, DOT, NRC, CDC etc.). Participation on Institutional Biosafety Committee, Radiation Safety Committee a plus. EHS&S experience in life sciences, biotech, pharmaceutical industry preferred. Must be computer literate (Microsoft Office software).
