Corporate Safety Director

 The Safety Director is responsible for establishing priorities, focus and operational standards for the Health, Safety and Environmental (or HSE), including loss prevention/control activities for the company.  Oversees the effective implementation and management of all safety programs, policies, communication efforts, reporting, administration and accident prevention in accordance with all internal company policies and guidelines, and all regulatory standards in the states where we operate.

Responsibilities 

  • Work across the organization to develop and promote safety as a foundational element to the company culture and oversee the development and delivery of communications, training, and programs that communicate culture, values, and guidance for all Associates in performing safe work.
  • Track and evaluate jobsite safety trends and leading risk indicators. Collaborate with company executives, field leadership, and risk management to develop and implement corrective measures and provide expertise in the inspection, analysis, audit and/or investigation of safety practices.
  • Interface with senior executives, leads cultural, and behavior change, develops and implements HSE programs (including policies & procedures), and leverages industry programs and benchmarks practices as necessary.
  • Provide administrative and technical direction and provide updates on all corporate safety and health programs, procedures and policies.
  • Analyze the organization's critical HSE requirements, identifying deficiencies and potential opportunities, and developing innovative solutions that are implemented by the company.
  • Partner with division, project and department leaders to ensure compliance with all safety programs, procedures and policies
  • Assume a leadership role with accident investigations; facilitate communication of accident investigation findings to all levels of company.
  • Perform periodic jobsite inspections and prepare reports.
  • Review all safety documentation/reports for accuracy and completeness; ensure all required documents are forwarded to the appropriate governmental agencies per regulations and to company insurance carrier per their requirements.
  • Partner with business leaders to prepare safety-related input for bid proposals.
  • Organize and implement safety programs for new projects including safety incentive programs and post-accident alcohol and drug testing.
  • Develop and maintaining HSE databases and internal websites.
  • Develop, strengthen and sustain productive and collaborative working relationships with all levels of the organization.
  • Support all company policies, procedures and values at all times.
  • Provide leadership oversight (direct and indirectly) to the HSE team.
  • Performing additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Safety Management, Construction or related field.  Master degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering or related discipline preferred.
  • A minimum of 15 years progressive leadership experience in the function; minimum of 8 years of safety leadership experience and applying jobsite safety practices, and a minimum of 5 years working with senior leadership implementing business strategy.
  • Registered professional certification from a nationally recognized board (Certified Safety Professional, Certified Safety Auditor, OSHA 500, or similar certification).
  • Prior experience establishing a "safety" culture in a company.
  • Proven track record of influencing key decision makers at the executive level regarding safety strategies and the ability to successfully operationalize and integrate into the day-to-day business activities ("strategic-doer").
  • In-depth technical working knowledge of current OSHA, and other governmental regulations related to the construction industry.
  • Strong business acumen, detail orientation, ability to effectively utilize analytics to drive business results, and an entrepreneurial orientation.

  • Prior experience leading/guiding an organization through a large incident event; effectively addressing both internal and external customer needs.
  • Advanced knowledge of the construction industry practices, risk management and field operations, including subcontractor relations.
  • Proven experience leading HSE and driving strategies and initiatives that improve workplace safety.
  • Prior experience successfully scaling a business to achieve growth objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize information and to develop and leverage analytics, identify trends, and improve metrics.
  • Ability to define a clear strategic vision, motivate others to achieve desired results, and successfully develop a high-performing team.
  • Ability to travel as required (approximately 40%)
