Manage the corporate safety, drug and alcohol, and Department of Transportation program ensuring Sunflower Electric Power Corporation provides a safe working environment and complies with safety regulations.

Manage the Sunflower safety program and ensure employees are provided the leadership necessary to establish and embrace an attitude of working safely and are provided a safe working environment.

Serve as the key subject matter resource to advise and ensure all Sunflower work sites are safe and the company complies with policies, procedures, regulations (e.g. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), Department of Transportation (DOT), worker’s compensation, and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)), and Article 18 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

  • Critically review on an ongoing basis the effectiveness of the safety function through measurement and assessment.
  • Work closely with managers and supervisors in the training and development, investigation, appraisal, and discipline of employees and supervisors involved in safety related activities. Develop and provide safety performance metrics.
  • Identify, develop, recommend, and implement measures to eliminate or reduce individual accident and health hazards. Compose policies and procedures. Inspect and ensure safety and protective equipment are available, installed, in proper working order, and being used.
  • Ensure work sites and safety equipment are audited and inspected for hazard assessment and ensure follow through on corrective action. Also inspect specific projects or job work sites where unusual equipment, supplies/materials, numbers of staff, etc. may be needed.
  • Ensure on-site contractors abide by safety procedures and regulations.
  • Administer the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) program ensuring accurate and available information on chemicals across the company.
  • Ensure accurate records for OSHA are tracked and maintained and submit reports as required.
  • Supervise the Safety and driver’s award programs

Top Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in safety, environmental health and safety (EHS), industrial hygiene, business, occupational health, or related field and eight years progressive industrial or utility experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and other applicable safety policies and best practices.
