Department Overview

The Critical Safety Risk organization is responsible for leading PG&E’s efforts to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries by creating, implementing and driving best-in-class risk management solutions, tools, practices, and systems. This includes managing the Enterprise Safety Management System (ESMS) and overseeing critical safety risks and lifesaving programs such as the Contractor Safety Program, hazardous energies, confined space and fall protection. 

Position Summary

The Critical Safety Risk Director is a key function within the Enterprise Health & Safety team.  This position is responsible for leading and driving a methodical approach to managing PG&E’s top safety risks, in a way that properly identifies hazards, evaluates risk, assigns ownership and tracks improvements.  This requires subject matter expertise in technical safety engineering programs, bowtie analysis, and project management.

Reporting Relationship

This position will report to the Vice President of Enterprise Health & Safety and Chief Safety Officer.

Job Responsibilities

  • Leads PG&E’s efforts to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries and to decrease other safety incidents by creating, driving, and implementing best-in-class risk management solutions, tools, practices, and systems.
  • Develops processes to assess critical risks, regularly reviews existing risk mitigation practices, collaborates with others to ensure no material risk is left unaddressed, and keeps track of progress being achieved in risk reduction efforts.
  • Implements, in a collaborative and inclusive way, an enterprise safety management system, promoting the sharing of best practices, learning and benchmarking, including ISO45000 certification.
  • Works with the various lines of business and functions to increase consistency through solutions and strategies.
  • Functions as a subject matter expert for a suite of safety critical standards aimed at controlling key, common risks, like control of hazardous energies, working at heights, confined spaces, contractor safety, etc.
  • Serves as the recognized expert in critical safety risk management, including the application, improvement, and use of critical control field verifications and associated software and data analysis.
  • Influences senior leaders on strategies to comply with processes, policies and best practices, improving company’s risk management program and meeting internal and external expectations.
  • Keeps up to date on technological developments, industry tendencies, and innovative solutions. Takes necessary action proactively to improve and modernize the company’s practices.
  • Leads risk assessments, incident investigations, audits and training.
  • Manages and leads staff to accomplish results through effective recruitment & selection, training & development, performance management and rewards & recognition.

Background Qualifications

Minimum

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety Engineering, Safety Management or job-related discipline or job equivalent experience
  • Experience in controlling hazardous energies
  • Experience in utility industry, company similar to PG&E, 4 years
  • Experience in safety, or related, 10 years 
  • Leadership experience
  • Experienced in safety management systems, including ISO 45000
  • Experienced in control of hazardous energies, confined space entry, working at heights, electrical safety, cranes and hoisting, and other programs/risks applicable to the utilities industry.
  • Expert knowledge of fatality prevention programs, critical risk management, safety management systems and key programs necessary to keep workers safe in a high-risk industrial setting.
  • Ability to lead risk assessments using different techniques depending on the circumstances and needs.
  • Knowledgeable in OSHA regulatory requirements, process safety and enterprise risk management process

Desired

  • Master’s Degree in Safety Management or Safety Engineering
  • Experience in project management
  • Significant knowledge of bowtie analysis and effective contractor safety management practices.
  • Strong leadership and collaboration skills to create teams, develop plans, drive progress and accomplish results.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including interpersonal and presentation skills, to effectively influence others, including senior leaders.
  • Strategic decision-making skills to organize, plan, and implement complex multi-year initiatives, as well as ability to multi-task and meet tight deadlines. Customer-oriented, with a demonstrated ability of achieving measured superior performance improvements.
