Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager

Company Overview:
Royal Oak Enterprises, LLC is a leading manufacturer and marketer of branded and private label charcoal, firelog and firebuilding products. In addition, the Company also manufactures railroad cross ties, which strengthens our relationship with our suppliers in the charcoal business. Given the recent acquisition of the new business segment of Pine Mountain and Diamond brands, many changes are in process at the company requiring enhanced leadership.

Position Summary:  
Plans, directs, and implements the EHS programs for the Royal Oak facilities located in Arkansas & MIssouri.  Responsible for supporting each facility in implementing and sustaining environmental and safety programs to ensure a safe, healthy, compliant, and incident-free work workplace utilizing a risk based approach to employee health and safety. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements environmental programs, policies in compliance with regulation and company policy including all environmental media- air, water and hazardous waste.
  • Coordinates efforts to reduce pollutant emissions from facilities through technologically sound and economical methods.
  •  Responsible for recordkeeping and reporting requirements under permitted environmental processes.  
  •  Responsible for management of hazardous waste storage, handling, disposal/removal, investigation of accidents, compiling and submitting required OSHA reports for ROE facilities of responsibility.  
  •  Provides on call (24 hour) response for safety, medical and environmental emergencies and coordinates all facility emergency response and site evacuation programs, including the design and execution of annual drills and communication with management.
  •  Audits company facilities and recommends and ensures corrective action for hazardous situations in compliance with OSHA, DOT and EPA regulations.
  •  Performs hazard assessments, deploying a risk based approach to safety, for manufacturing activities including the need for personal protective equipment (PPE). 
  •  Conducts or coordinates training for compliance for health and safety programs including hazard communications, safe working practices, PPE and approves all PPE purchased to ensure compliance with regulations. 
  • Utilizing the prevention through design methodology reviews new equipment, materials, and processes to assure employee safety.
  • Recommends improvements in policies, procedures and equipment to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Plans and coordinates industrial hygiene testing (air sampling, noise level testing, etc.) to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations. Appropriately responds to onsite environmental inspections and inquiries from federal, state and local agencies.
  • Evaluates workstations and conducts an Ergonomic program to better improve employee working conditions.
  • Provides recommendation and backup of health and wellness programs including workers compensation, medical, and drug /alcohol testing.
  • Provides regulatory compliance assistance for Environmental programs and permits.
  • Organizes and facilitates the effective use of safety committees at each operation.
  • Represents the organization in community or industry safety groups. Responds to community inquiries regarding the environmental impact of facilities. Coordinates responses to governmental proposals affecting ROE facilities operations.
  • Poses no direct threat to the health or safety of himself/herself, of others, or to property. Defined as a significant risk of substantial harm that cannot be eliminated or reduced to an acceptable level by reasonable accommodation.
  • Requires regular attendance to perform essential element as contained herein between the assigned start and end times for work.
  • Performs such individual assignments as management may direct.
  • Establishes and maintains effective work relationships within the department, the Corporation and the community; and maintains the professional competence, knowledge and skill necessary for the satisfactory performance of all assigned responsibilities.

Position Requirements/Qualifications:

Minimum BS degree with emphasis in occupational safety or in a complementary field such as biology or chemistry.


  • 3 -5 years of environmental, health & safety experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Professional knowledge of federal standards (OSHA, EPA, DOT, CFR 1910) for the manufacturing environment.


Certification (CHMM, REP, CSP, CIH) is a plus.


  • Must be conscientious and able to work with confidential information daily.
  • Energetic, motivated individual, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.  Ability to interact with professionals at all levels.
  • Strong computer skills including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 
  • Detail oriented, accurate, and possess good organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn fast and work under general supervision.
  • Skills to work on multiple projects and tasks are required.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Must enjoy and be productive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment, with little direct supervision.
