Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Professional

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is seeking applications for an Environmental Health & Safety Professional for the Risk Management Safety & Security department. This is a full-time, permanent staff position.

Purpose of the Position: The primary purpose of this position is to implement and analyze the University health and safety programs; monitor occupational health programs; inspect facilities; ensure safety regulatory compliance; emergency preparedness; investigations; assessments; and work with campus stakeholders to ensure the safety of the campus community.

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or closely related science; and four years of progressive experience needed to perform the work required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Essential Job Duties: Assist with the development of Environmental Health and Safety programs, such as Asbestos, Ergonomics, Indoor Air Quality, Hearing Conservation, Respiratory Protection, Electrical Safety, Confined Space, Lock Out Tag Out, and Industrial Hygiene sampling. Research emerging health and safety industry trends and regulatory changes. Build relationships and serve as a liaison with federal, state and local authorities in matters related to environmental health and safety. Identify health and safety hazards and implement corrective actions. Provide consultative safety services and respond to emergency incidents. 

Inspect university facilities, equipment and employee work practices for conformance with regulatory standards. Investigate safety concerns and assist with the development of corrective action measures. Provide environmental health and safety technical support for renovation and construction projects.

Administer and oversee contractors providing services related to hearing conservation, respiratory protection and other safety services. Develop and facilitate various environmental health and safety training programs. Facilitate safety presentations to various campus community members. Develop program audit spreadsheets and conduct departmental safety audits to assess regulatory compliance level. Analyze program performance and implement continuous improvement strategies. Write reports and communicate results effectively.

Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree in the life sciences, engineering, business or related field. Relevant certifications (i.e. OSHT, ASP, CSP, CIH, etc.). Three to five years of occupational health and safety experience. Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and application of asbestos, construction, ventilation systems and electrical safety. Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in higher education, health care, or public sector.

Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment in applying and interpreting safety compliance policies, procedures, and regulations. Demonstrated experience with calibrating industrial hygiene equipment and new technology systems. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of building equipment (e.g., HVAC, Electrical Safety, Confined Space, and Lock-Out / Tag-Out programs.
