Health Physics / Radiation Safety Officer

Health Physicist 4 (Laser Safety Officer)

The Pennsylvania State University Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is seeking a highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills to join the radiation protection team located at University Park campus. Under the direction of the Radiation Safety Officer, the individual will serve as the University's Laser Safety Officer and work with other Health Physics professionals to implement the University's comprehensive radiation safety program at all University locations, except the Hershey Medical Center and the College of Medicine.

Responsibilities include: managing and overseeing the University's laser safety program; supporting the laboratory and research safety, radioactive material safety, and radiation producing equipment safety programs; and training, instrument calibration, radiobioassay, environmental monitoring, auditing, surveying, and record keeping for all programs listed.

Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in a Science, Engineering or related discipline or higher plus five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor's degree or in Health Physics/Environmental Health or related discipline is preferred.

Required competencies include: comprehensive knowledge of laser principle and laser safety, working knowledge of federal, state, and local standards and regulations; and an understanding of good practices in a wide range of EHS programs. Demonstrated experience communicating technical information to a wide range of audiences is necessary.

This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as part of your job responsibilities. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background check. The successful candidate must pass and maintain the Nuclear Regulatory Commission trustworthiness and reliability requirements. Must possess or be able to acquire a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with hazardous materials endorsement within 180 days of hire. Note: This position is subject to Federal Department of Transportation testing for alcohol and controlled substances (49 CFT Part 40), and physical examination requirements per 67 PA. Code 231.85.
