Department & Position Background:
The Department of Environment Health and Safety's Occupational Safety and Health Section is committed to providing state of the art consultative services to assist Cornell University in fostering a safe and healthy campus environment. We are a team of safety & health professionals with expertise in industrial hygiene, safety management, employee training, and injury prevention. Our work involves interactions among many subject areas, including industrial hygiene, public health, and safety engineering. Our team develops and implements University-wide safety and health programs to provide employees with relevant and clear safe work procedures and to comply with applicable state and federal employee safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities:  
Provides technical and regulatory management for the industrial hygiene program and is required to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control workplace conditions that may cause injury, illness and/or exposure, at Cornell University with minimal oversight provided by the Manager of Occupational Health, Safety and Injury Prevention. This position may include development of regulatory guidance documents, conducting qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments, and identifying exposure-related engineering controls that may be needed.   The position will manage compliance programs, provide technical support, compliance guidance, and response to concerns and incidents on campus.

Core Qualifications:
A full list of core qualifications include but are not limited to the following:

  • BS in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science and a minimum of 2 years’ experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in industrial hygiene.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.Excellent computer skills, including MS Office programs and EHS management system.
  • Ability to interact well with all levels of personnel within an organization
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment including: air purifying & supplied air respirators, hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, and protective clothing.
  • Ability to work and lift and/or move 20-50 pounds while wearing protective equipment and clothing, including respiratory protection devices, and have manual dexterity.
  • Must have a valid Driver's license and a good driving record.
  • Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) – CIH is preferred.
