Industrial Hygienist (IH)

FUNCTION:
Provides professional level industrial hygiene (IH) support for a multitude of work activities.  Is responsible for development and approval of all safety related plans, procedures, and policies. Provides oversight for the field activities listed below.

DUTIES:  

• Packaging and shipping of IH equipment for re-calibration and/or repairs. 

• Operational checks of IH field equipment and monitoring systems.

• Development of action plans in response to identified deficiencies.  

• Detailed technical operations in compliance with written work plans, protocols, and procedures.  

• Development and implementation of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) to ensure job execution of tasks that involve the preparation, interpretation, or review of calculations, specifications, plans, investigations, surveys, structures, systems, or equipment with relatively few complex features.  

• Monitoring of project and facility industrial hygiene programs.  

• Perform other duties as assigned. 


WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Ability to participate in physically demanding work while wearing personal protective equipment including respiratory protection.

• Medically qualified to wear a respirator.

• Able to lift 50 pounds.

• Able to climb ladders.  

• Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.

 

Requirements

• Minimum of fifteen years of construction experience in the field and program over sight.

• Bachelor of Science in Industrial Hygiene or science field (engineering, Occupational Safety and Health, or related) preferred.  A minimum of fifteen years of substantially related experience and background and course work relating to Industrial Hygiene may be substituted for having a Bachelor of Science Degree.

• Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) by American Board of Industrial Hygiene, preferred.

• Demonstrated knowledge of applicable Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, occupational safety and health policies, and procedures.

• Strong preference on three years’ experience in IH/safety field activities including experience in determining hazard controls based on review of chemical and toxicological hazards and concerns.

• Ability to obtain DOE "L" or "Q" security clearance, if such clearance becomes necessary.

• Thorough knowledge of IH instrumentation use and interpretation of results.

• Understanding of IH and Safety issues as defined by the scope of work and associated Occupational Safety and Health performance requirements.

• Must be able to determine appropriate analytical techniques based on review of chemical and toxicological hazards.

• Demonstrated ability to develop and follow procedures and task requirements; appropriately document survey and data collection results; use different levels of PPE (including respiratory protection); review IH data and to interpret and explain results; and identify deficiencies and to determine and facilitate corrective action and to monitor work.

• Communicate effectively (written and verbal) with field, project management, and client representatives is essential.

• Technical knowledge of industrial hygiene systems, principles, and calculations.
