Are you a Radiation Safety Professional looking for an opportunity to lead a comprehensive program that includes responsibility for two hospitals and a nuclear research reactor?

Our client, the University of New Mexico, is recruiting for a Radiation Safety Officer (#RSO) in Albuquerque, NM job 1150. Relocation assistance possible within the US  This is a full time position as an employee of our client. Response Instruction listed below. 

Position Summary:
The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (HSC) Office of Research is seeking an experienced, dynamic, results-oriented professional to lead our team as the Radiation Safety Officer.

The University holds the following licenses with the State of New Mexico Environmental Department (NMED), Environmental Protection Division, Radiation Control Bureau:

  • Type A Broad Scope to include Medical Diagnosis and Therapy, Academic and Research
  • Specific License for Commercial Radiopharmacy
  • NRC Nuclear Research Reactor License
  • The Radiation Safety Officer will, under limited supervision, act as the principal technical resource to departments and campus management on radiation safety and advise leadership on strategies and tactics relating to the technical and regulatory direction of the radiation safety program.

The successful candidate will be responsible to: 

  • Advise leadership on technical and regulatory issues, strategic direction of the radiation safety program.
  • Maintain the institution licenses (3)
  • Interpret new regulations and apply them to the program as appropriate
  • Respond to emergency situations involving radioactive material 
  • Manage reporting requirements to regulatory agencies
  • Serve as the primary contact for New Mexico Environmental Department and other regulators
  • Perform annual audit of the radiation safety program
  • Oversee and manage the ongoing maintenance of Unit SOPs and the Radiation Safety Manual 
  • Provide leadership and supervision to the Radiation Safety personnel 
  • Other related radiation safety activities
     

Qualifications for Hire:

  • Recent experience (within 7 years) in the use of radiation in an academic/research healthcare environment and 1) experience as an RSO or 2) experience as an associate RSO.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in physical science, engineering, biological science or related field.
  • Strong working knowledge of current regulations related to a radiation safety program.
  • Training as required by US NRC under 10 CFR 35.50/35.57 and 10 CFR 33 for a Type A Broad Scope license.
  • Experience to oversee activity under 10 CFR 35.100, 200, 300, 400, and 600.
  • Acceptance as Radiation Safety Officer by the New Mexico Environmental Department.
     

The preferred qualifications, which are not required for UNM to review a potential candidate, are: 

  • Board certification by the American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine or the American Board of Radiology or current professional designation as a Certified Health Physicist (CHP).
  • Experience to oversee activity under 10 CFR 35.1000 (y90 microspheres).

UNM is the largest licensee in the State of New Mexico with a Type A Broad Scope license, 2 hospitals and numerous off-site clinics, 4 Nuclear Medicine programs, full Radiation Oncology program, basic scientific and human use research, research reactor, industrial and analytical radiation source program, and commercial radiopharmacy. Radiation safety management program has over 1200 badged employees
