Safety & Loss Control Specialist

Provide and instruct technical safety training to certain participating electric cooperative (the Cooperatives) systems personnel.  Works closely with the Cooperatives by educating, training, engaging, serving, complying, and guiding to empower their safety goals and objectives. 

Create a loss control program that provides extensive curriculum of hands-on-safety training in the field as well as classroom instruction in key areas.  This position will require travel during the work week to different Cooperative system locations throughout the state to provide training. Flexibility in where the position would be headquartered (city or town) in the state is negotiable.

The minimum requirements of knowledge and previous experience necessary for an individual to be considered for this position.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in occupational health, industrial safety, industrial hygiene, or related field.
  • 5 – 7 years of experience working in the electrical utility industry (i.e. safety, lineman, substation technician)
  • Strong working knowledge of regulatory requirements which include but are not limited to OSHA, ADOSH, DOT, NEC, NESC, ANSI, NFPA, and all applicable industry standards.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills.  Must be an effective communicator. 
  • Excellent organization skills.
  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design process and have excellent presentation skills.
  • 3 years training experience.
  • OSHA Training Certifications preferred. (Must complete within one year of employment) 
  • CPR/First Aid/AED Instructors Certification. 
  • Certified Loss Control Professional, preferred. (Must complete within three years of employment)
  • Must have or be able to obtain a valid Arizona’s Driver license.
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of an organization.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education, training, and/or experience can be substituted for requirements listed above.

The major activities for which this position is held accountable.

  • Develops Safety Programs that are effective and creditable.
  • Operations Safety include proper use of PPE, hazard recognition/communications, pole top  rescue, substation safety, equipment grounding, DOT (load securement) and heavy equipment operations, fall protection, outage and storm safety, etc.
  • Office Safety includes ergonomics, emergency action plan training, office hazard recognition, slips/trips/falls, blood borne pathogen, proper lifting, etc. 
  • Conducts Technical Training Programs and Workshops onsite with employees to provide key safety training.
  • Monitors and interprets OSHA and DOT Regulations
  • Develops, Publishes, distributes and updates applicable Safety Manual(s).
  • Develops, Monitors and Coordinates a Mutual Aid Program.
  • Advises and Interprets National Electric Safety Code.
  • Conduct safety audits for the field and office.
  • Compliance training with recordkeeping, OSHA log recording, DOT truck inspection documentation and recording.
  • Assists with Accident Investigation if asked for by a Cooperative.
  • Assist in establishing, planning, and organizing  a Loss Control Committee among the Cooperatives with all tasks associated with special programs, or  any other Loss Control training or classes.
  • NRECA’s RESAP (Rural Electric Safety Achievement Program) – providing the audit support for Cooperatives who are in this program.
  • Providing additional services and equipment such as electrical testing for protective grounding equipment and vehicle grounds.
  • Provide technical advice, coaching, guidance, and mentoring to Cooperative systems on safety initiatives and work practices.
  • Assist with the development of guidelines, procedures and continuous improvement initiatives to reduce work process risks, raise safety awareness, and improve safe work practices.
