Safety Specialist

 

The Georgia-Pacific Naheola Mill is seeking to hire a Safety Specialist. This is a salaried position that will report to the Manager of Safety & Health Services. Specifically, this position would assist in mill risk assessments, contractor safety activities, loss prevention, machine safeguarding, Lock Tag Verify and other safety compliance standards as assigned. Georgia-Pacific’s Naheola Mill located in Pennington, Alabama, is a manufacturing site for the company’s well-known consumer products business. More than 800 employees produce a wide range of products for the consumer business, including Quilted Northern® and Angel Soft® bath tissue, Sparkle® paper towels, and Dixie® napkins, as well as bleached paperboard used in Dixie® paper cups and plates.
 
The mill is the largest employer in the community and is engaged in supporting community outreach, workforce development and education. The area is a sportsman’s paradise with world-class hunting for deer, turkey and other small game and is bounded on the east by the Tombigbee River which provides such recreation as freshwater fishing, boating and water skiing. Residents of this area enjoy the mild climate, a low cost of living, and is an easy drive to the many resort communities and soft white-sand beaches of the Gulf Coast.
 
A Day In The Life Typically Includes:
     * Developing systems/methods for identifying hazards and evaluating risk in existing or future equipment, processes, and operations
     * Enhancing the Mills capability in the development and implementation of fundamental safety programs including Confined Space, Emergency Response, Electrical, Safe Work Practices, Lock Tag Verify, Fall Protection, Incident Investigation, Mobile Equipment, Cranes and Rigging, Personal Protective Equipment, and Safe Work Permits
     * Assisting the Safety & Health Services department with aspects of the Safety & Health programs for the mill, including continuous improvement of safety & health programs
     * Providing leadership and direction for the mill’s contractor safety management program, machine safeguarding, safety design standards, Lock/Tag/Verify and others as assigned
     * Assisting in the development and delivery of required regulatory training
     * Performing Hazard Identification Risk Assessments (HIRA) and other risk assessments at the facility
     * Developing the mills capability to conduct effective incident investigations to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence
     * Providing coaching and mentoring to facilitate ownership for safety at all levels
     * Providing support to the development of our Facility Risk Assessment (FRA) and Department Risk Assessments (DRA)
     * Leading, coaching and developing employees utilizing the MBM® Guiding Principles
     * Leading the facility through safety audits and inspection
     * Managing safety teams related to Life Safety Rules and Critical Procedures
     * Providing a visible safety presence in the field with operations, production, maintenance, and contract work forces
 
What You Will Need:
Basic Qualifications:
     * Associate Degree or higher
     * Three (3) years or more of safety-related work experience in an industrial environment
     * Knowledge of OSHA 1910 compliance regulations to include recordkeeping, as well as relevant industry safety standards such as ISO 13849, ANSI B11, NFPA 79, and ANSI Z244.1
     * Proficiency using Microsoft Office software (i.e., Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
     * Experience and knowledge in recognizing and mitigating hazards
     * Ability to work extended hours and weekends as needed and ability to serve on a rotational weekend duty team
 
What Will Put You Ahead?
Preferred Qualifications:
     * Bachelor’s degree or higher in Safety or Engineering
     * Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or demonstrated progress to attain CSP or other professional safety certifications
     * Five (5) years or more of Safety & Health experience in paper manufacturing, converting or packaging environment
     * Demonstrated ability to establish sustainable systems for compliance and continuous improvement
