Safety Specialist

Southwest VA

Position Summary:  The Safety Specialist will develop and help administer effective Health and Safety Programs, audit the effectiveness of programs and recommend corrective actions to reduce risks and protect the health and safety of our employees, customers and environment. This position will work directly with employees and management regarding safety issues and report to the Site Safety Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recommend and administer company-wide health & safety programs.
  • Conduct incident and near-miss investigations at the facility to identify root cause, develop corrective actions, and implement solutions.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable health and safety standards as established by OSHA, DoD, and local health & safety laws or regulations.
  • Develop and conduct safety training and presentations, including safety orientation to new hire employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Determine and update metrics, audits and key task monitors for the facility.
  • Administer and maintain the SDS information and appropriate access to SDS files company-wide.
  • Oversees maintenance of all safety department equipment, stock and reorders parts and equipment.
  • Participate in new product/process reviews including process hazard analyses and training.
  • Prepare reports including observations, analysis and recommendations for control and correction of hazards.
  • Ensures compliance with health and safety regulations and ensures necessary records are maintained and prepared according to established guidelines.
  • Conduct job hazards analysis and assessments throughout the facility

Education and experience required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, chemistry, engineering or other related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years, hands-on, safety experience in a chemical production environment.
  • Problem solving skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Excellent teamwork skills
  • Willing to learn new skills.

Preferred experience:

  • Hands-on, experience in Process Safety Management (PSM)
  • Experience at DoD facilities
