BAE Systems is seeking a Safety Manager - 1st and 2nd shift to establish and promote the maintenance of a safe, accident free work environment at the government owned contractor operated Radford Army Ammunition Plant (RFAAP). The Safety Manager will provide safety leadership, ensure facility compliance with OSHA and corporate safety directives, implement and maintain a safety management system including understanding risks and opportunities, improve safety performance, and ensure facility safety policies and procedures are aligned with governmental regulations.

The position will report to the Safety, Health, and Environmental Manager. The Safety Manager oversees RFAAP’s safety programs and safety staff (8) to achieve and maintain compliance with U.S. Army requirements, federal, state, and local laws and regulations, as well as corporate policies and procedures.

Key responsibilities include the following:

  • Identify best practices and lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce work process risks, raise safety awareness, and improve safe work practice.
  • Facilitate a work environment that supports a safe and healthy culture.
  • Conduct or coordinate safety related worker training in areas such as hazard identification, hot work requirements, safety laws and regulations, the use of safety equipment, and other OSHA required trainings.
  • Plan and coordinate safety audits and facility inspections to identify and correct potential hazards and to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Investigate industrial accidents, near-miss incidents, and occupational injuries to determine causes and install preventive measures.
  • Provide technical advice, coaching, guidance, and mentoring to employees on safety initiatives and necessary safety related changes.
  • Work with managers, employees, bargaining unit representatives to ensure a compliant safety program with continuous improvement.
  • Work closely with the Process Safety Management Manager and Occupational Health Manager to ensure a cohesive and compliant Safety and Health Program.
  • Develop, update, and recommend RFAAP safety programs, policies, and/or procedural changes to enhance organizational effectiveness or ensure legal compliance. This includes monitoring industry developments, trends, and legislation relating to safety.
  • Ensure that OSHA record keeping and reporting requirements are met.
  • Analyze and interpret safety, injury, and accident data for monthly reports to management and RFAAP partners with an emphasis on leading safety indicators to identify trends in safety performance.
  • Represent BAE Systems with regulatory agencies, corporate, and government customers regarding safety matters.
  • Manage and maintain the safety department and program budgets.
  • Develop, train and mentor department staff.

Typical Education & Experience:
Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years work experience or equivalent experience

Required Skills and Education:

  • Bachelor degree in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, safety sciences, environmental health, or other related field with a minimum of 8 years work experience in industrial safety. At least 2 of these years, must be managing a safety department with direct reports and budgetary responsibilities.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and computer knowledge. High level of effectiveness in a changing, fast-paced environment. Ability to work independently, take initiative, and make improvements to drive safety excellence and performance.
  • Functional and technical knowledge and skills of safety requirements and regulations with the ability to interpret and apply Federal OSHA and local codes to site specific situations. Ability to maintain a professional attitude and defuse unsettled situations to create a positive safety culture.

Preferred Skills and Education:

  • At least 10 years’ experience with 5 years as a safety manager at an industrial manufacturing facility.
  • Experience at a chemical and/or explosive facility and experience with government contracting desired.
  • Desire for candidate to have experience with implementing and maintaining a safety management system and working knowledge of hazards associated with explosives manufacturing, Army safety regulations, engineering standards, and incident command system.
  • Professional safety certifications such as Certified Safety Professional or CIH Certified Industrial Hygienist desired, but no required.
