Aerojet Rocketdyne has a wonderful opportunity for a  Safety Engineer (Senior SHE Engineer) opening in Culpeper, Virginia. 

The successful individual will work under limited direction and guidance, and will support a wide variety of SH&E (emphasis on Safety) compliance efforts and projects. In this role you will perform assignments requiring a wide application of safety principles, theories, and concepts plus a working knowledge of SH&E disciplines and regulations as they relate to the manufacture, testing, and research & development (R&D) of solid rocket propellants, rocket motors, and related products. This current opening may be filled at this level as posted or at one level higher.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

  • 25% - Reviews, analyzes, and evaluates facilities, operating equipment, methods, practices, and procedures for compliance with federal, state, and local Safety regulatory requirements and Company and site-specific standards. Includes preparation of reports and applications for safety-related permits/licenses. Supports related interactions (e.g., meetings, audits, inspections) with internal and external customers, contractors, and regulatory agencies. Also includes participation in, support for, and/or leading safety compliance programs for PPE selection, hazard communication, ergonomics, indoor air quality/industrial hygiene and related monitoring, fire safety/loss prevention, and contractor safety.
  • 20% - Participates in, supports and/or performs internal evaluations, inspections/audits, and surveys of processes, designs, procedures, operating equipment, and work sites to identify occupational hazards and recommend improvements/corrective actions to minimize/control the chemical, safety, and physical hazards and risk potential to employees and contractors.  Supports or conducts Job Safety/Process Hazard Analyses.  Includes evaluation of management of change (MOC) for new chemicals; planned new or modified manufacturing or R&D facilities; equipment, tooling, or processes; and procedures with related hazard analyses to ensure they can be implemented in compliance with SH&E regulations and Company and site-specific standards.
  • 20% - Participates in, supports and/or performs investigation of injuries and incidents/accidents, to determine their causes, and to recommend corrective/preventative actions to prevent their recurrence; discusses such problems and their solutions with supervisors and employees; and coordinates with responsible parties to track actions to closure.
  • 15% - Supports development and implementation of company and site-specific SH&E management system programs, initiatives, and standards, including SH&E lead in supporting key management system elements of contractor safety, ergonomics, and incident investigation. Also supports or conducts tracking, analyzing, and reporting of SH&E metrics/indicators including injury trends and leading indicators; and tracking closeout of safety suggestions/concerns.
  • 15% - Functions as SH&E Training Coordinator; responsible for SH&E training plan and schedule; develops, updates, and conducts online and instructor-led SH&E training sessions for compliance with SH&E regulations and Company programs, initiatives, and standards; interacts with onsite Training Coordinator to ensure SH&E training courses and records are properly implemented/maintained in company-wide training system.
  • 5% - Supports emergency preparedness and assists in emergency response situations, including fire brigade, spill response.

Requirements:
Requires a Bachelor's degree in Safety or a relevant science-based discipline with 5 years of directly related technical experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

  • Full understanding of OSHA General Industry Safety and Health and Construction standards is required.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist or Certified Safety Professional.
  • Experience/knowledge/training in OSHA General Industry and Construction Regulations, Job Safety/Process Hazard Analysis, Explosives Safety regulations (e.g., DoD 4145.26M), and/or OSHA VPP program.
  • 24- or 40-hour OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training.
  • Firefighter and/or hazmat/spill response training, experience, and knowledge.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements:
The work environment may require a combination of indoor and outdoor activity (hot, cold, wet, humid conditions) with a varied amount of walking, standing, sitting, climbing (i.e. ladders, stair, scaffolding, ramps), balance (maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces), bending, reaching, handling/fingering (seizing, holding, grasping, turning picking, pinching), stooping, kneeling, crouching and ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds.

Work may require the ability to operate material handling equipment (forklift, crane, hoist, man lift, etc.) in a safe manner. While performing the duties of this job, employee may work around variable noise levels or with fume or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, etc. requiring the use of personal protective equipment such as face protection (safety glasses, goggles, face shield), foot protection (steel toed shoes, rubber boots, etc.), gloves, hard hat, shop coat and hearing protection. Some positions may require Respirator clearance up to and including the Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Level A clearance.

Work requires the ability to change into or out of personal protective equipment when entering or exiting manufacturing, laboratory, or other areas. Some employees may be required to drive between various locations within the Company facility or between locations. Work duties may also be required to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer and/or the ability to travel by air or auto. Ability to distinguish colors may also be necessary. This position may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
