Sr. Health and Safety Leader

Georgia-Pacific has an immediate opening for a Sr. Health and Safety Leader at our Toledo, OR facility. Reporting to the Vice President, General Manager of the mill, the Sr. Health and Safety Leader will provide both occupational and process safety leadership as well as strategic direction to the Toledo leadership team and facility, through the application of Georgia-Pacific’s Market Based Management (MBM®) Framework and Guiding Principles. This position will influence and lead a Health and Safety capability group including Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Medical Management, Emergency Team, and Process Safety. This strategic leadership role creates long term value by ensuring Health and Safety excellence and performance improvement is driven through culture change; Health and Safety strategies effectively address the facility’s risk profile; Georgia-Pacific’s 7-element Risk Management System (RMS) is effectively implemented, and appropriate leading and trailing metrics are well defined and effectively measured.

The selected candidate will provide leadership as it relates to Health and Safety through the application of Georgia-Pacific’s Market-Based Management® (MBM®) Framework and Guiding Principles.

A Day In The Life Typically Includes:
* Influencing the organization to include the leadership team, area leaders and union leaders to result in a step-change in the overall culture and performance of the mill
* Leading, coaching, and developing mill employees on the floor and leadership team utilizing the MBM® Guiding Principles and Operations Excellence tools to improve their capability and performance
* Providing leadership and strategic direction to achieve the safety & health and process safety visions through management commitment and employee ownership
* Integrating the human and organizational (HOP) concepts into the organization culture and practices
* Assisting facility leadership with the development of short and long-term safety & health objectives, targets, strategies, and measures that prioritize and mitigate risks
* Developing and maintaining the site’s Emergency Action Plan, including any coordination with local emergency response teams
* Leading the development of risk assessment methods/systems for anticipating, identifying, and evaluating hazards
* Leading and/or facilitating the leadership of Incident Investigations, along with oversight to assure recommendations are effective and completed to prevent recurrence
* Ensuring compliance with OSHA PSM and EPA RMP requirements for the covered process, as well as promote the use of process safety principles throughout the mill to reduce risk to our employees, our environment, and our community
* Leading and/or facilitating the leadership of Process Hazards Analyses (PHA) for processes involving highly hazardous chemicals
* Working closely with facility maintenance to assure mechanical integrity is managed in keeping with risk-based process safety objectives as well as compliance-based requirements
* Ensuring the development, improvement, and implementation of safety training systems 
* Ensuring the Risk Management System is utilized to sustain and improve performance
* Utilizing development plans to grow safety/health and process safety skills and knowledge
* Overseeing evaluation, interpretation, and compliance with safety laws, regulations and permits 
* Facilitating and represent the facility during agency inspections
* Providing a good foundation and solid understanding of Georgia-Pacific Safety & Health standards, OSHA regulations and all applicable federal and state regulations.
* Managing the worker’s compensation and medical management program
* Communicating with business unit safety and health and other personnel to assure alignment with business vision, strategy, and programs
* Facilitating knowledge sharing externally and internally to the facility
* Engaging in project management process to include project safety reviews, hazard analysis, risk assessments, pre-start up safety reviews
* Coordinating and oversight of contractor management program

 

What You Will Need:

Basic Qualifications:
* Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Safety & Health, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering or related field
* Five (5) or more years of supervisory experience in a Health and Safety leadership role 
* Ten (10) or more years of occupational and process safety experience in an industrial, chemical process or manufacturing environment
* Experience and working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910, and 1926
* Proficiency using Microsoft Office software (i.e., Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint)

 

What Will Put You Ahead?

Preferred Qualifications:
* Fifteen (15) or more years of occupational and process safety experience in an industrial, chemical process or manufacturing environment (i.e. pulp and paper manufacturing)
* Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification
* Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Chemical Engineering with process engineering experience 
* Experience working with OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) site

 

Georgia-Pacific Containerboard facility in Toledo, OR is a containerboard mill that was built in 1957 as the company’s first pulp and paper mill.
